Static

Sinsa-dong, Seoul, South Korea

Static treats jazz as the main event. In a compact second-floor room in Sinsa-dong, the turntables sit at the centre of the bar rather than being tucked away as decorative proof of taste. Every record played is jazz, with a strong focus on the 1950s and 1960s, selected to suit the pace of the room.

The system is anchored by 1950s JBL C40 Harkness speakers, driven by an Accuphase P-400 power amplifier, with two Technics SL-1200MK5 turntables handling playback. The owner chose the chain for reliable, long-running use and for the JBLs’ weight through the midrange, where horns and small jazz groups do much of their work.

The room is deliberately sparse, with warm wood, low light, and little clutter around the equipment. There is no enforced silence: a full room can be lively, while quieter nights settle into relaxed listening. Staff intervene only when someone becomes excessively loud or disruptive.

Static is open Tuesday to Saturday from 7pm to midnight and closed Sunday and Monday. It is walk-ins only, and the small capacity means groups are limited to four people.
