Sans Soleil is the basement music bar beneath Fleurs & Cadeaux in Montreal’s Chinatown. DJs start at 8 pm every night, which gives the room a clear purpose before the later crowd fills it. This is a social record bar, not a quiet jazz kissa, but the music is programmed rather than left to a house playlist.
The small room runs on low light, close tables and a rotating DJ schedule. Food from upstairs is served earlier in the evening, while a door charge may apply after 10:30 pm. Exact playback equipment and acoustic treatment have not been published.
Go early if you want a seat and enough space to follow the selector. Later on, Sans Soleil moves closer to a compact club, with the intimacy and pressure that come with it.
