Sam’s Listening Bar occupies a basement on Railroad Street in downtown St. Johnsbury. Records and cassettes are part of regular service, played in a room that treats music as a shared activity rather than decoration. The place is small, informal and closer to a friend’s living room than an audiophile showroom.
The selection moves through psychedelic rock, R&B, 1970s records and whatever else suits the night. Sam’s also books local and touring musicians, runs Sunday karaoke and makes room for community events. The owners are musicians themselves, and the bar does not take merch cuts or door fees from performers.
This is a social listening room, not a silent jazz kissa. Conversation is welcome, live nights can change the volume and the published code of conduct is direct about keeping the room inclusive. Best for listeners who value a wide-ranging record shelf, an unforced neighbourhood atmosphere and a programme that keeps changing.
